Description
Andrade Peptone Water (Veg.) is recommended for the study of carbohydrate fermentation reactions for bacterial differentiation and biochemical identification of microorganisms. The medium is formulated using veg-derived peptones instead of animal-origin peptones and meat extracts, making it free from BSE/TSE risks while providing nutritional performance comparable to conventional formulations. Peptone Water is a versatile basal medium to which appropriate carbohydrates can be incorporated for determination of fermentation of varying bacterial strains.
The medium is useful for both diagnostic and research labs in identifying key sugar fermentation tests, which is vital in identifying the enteric groups or other bacterial isolates of clinical significance. The tested carbohydrate can be sterilized separately by filtration or autoclaving, followed by aseptic addition to the sterile medium at the time of inoculation. Fermentation of this carbohydrate leads to the production of acid, thereby reducing the pH, which can be conveniently observed with Andrade?s indicator present. Veg peptone is used in this formulation that provides sufficient nitrogen and other essential growth factors; however, it is free from any fermentable carbohydrate. Additionally, it?s free from nitrates that may be useful to measure gas production in bacterial identification. Andrade?s Indicator, a variation of Acid Fuchsin indicate acid production ranging from straw-yellow to pink or red due to increased acidity following carbohydrate fermentation by the bacterial culture under study.
