For selective identification and differentiation of Listeria monocytogenes.   CHROMOGENIC  LISTERIA  AGAR  BASE (Modified) (as  per  ISO)is  used  for  selective  identification  of Listeria monocytogenes.This media is a modificationof original formulation of Notermans et al.(1991) and Mengaud et al.(1991). Listeria species grow over a pH range of 4.4 -9.6 and survive in food products with pH levels outside these parameters.           This  medium  is  helpful  in  specific  detection  of  β-glucosidase  activity. Listeriaspecies  hydrolyse  the chromogenic  substratein  the  medium  giving  blue  coloured  colonies.  Since  β-glucosidase  activity  is specific forListeriaspecies. Other organisms that possess this enzyme are inhibited by the selective agents.Organisms,unable  toutilize  the  chromogenic  substrate,give  white  colonies.   Further,  thedifferentialactivity is also obtained by rhamnose fermentation. The coloniesof L.monocytogenesand L.innocuaappear blue  with  a  yellow  halo  (rhamnose fermentation positive)  while  the  colonies  of L.ivanoviiappear  blue without a yellow halo (rhamnose fermentation negative).       Peptone, meat extract and Yeast extract provide nitrogen, vitamins, minerals and amino acids essential for growth.  Sodium  chloride  maintains  the  osmotic  balance  of  the  medium.  Agar  is  a  solidifying  agent.Lithium  chloride  and Chromogenic  Listeria  Selective  Supplement(TS  205) inhibit  growth  of  most  gram positive  bacteria,  gram  negative  bacteria,  yeasts  and  molds. Rhamnose  is  the  fermentable  carbohydrate with phenol red acts as afermentation indicato
